The Dorking Judo Club - Millennium League Round 2 - April 2nd 2006

On Sunday 2nd April Dorking took part in the second Millennium league competition of 2006. Peter, team coach was keen for the junior players to follow up on the success at the county trial, which this year counted as the first Millennium competition. He was not disappointed as the team put on a strong performance winning a silver and bronze medal. In addition for a group of mainly first timers the experience was valuable.

On Sunday the DJC team consisted of Luke Andrews U24kgs, Dan Ashwood and Jake Andrews U27kgs, James Trezize and Robert Macauley, Thomas Charman U34kgs, Sam Robinson and William Rudrum U42kgs.

As usual the lower weight groups had the largest number of competitors and were the hardest fought. William Rudrum who had put on a few grams since he was weighed at the club had to move up into the under 42kg weight group and won the Silver and Sam Robinson won Bronze.

Dorking contributed to the day by supplying some officials. Peter had a busy time as, in addition to organising the team, he was also one of the first aiders. The other first aider, also from Dorking, was Lucy - Alec and David Skelly’s mother. Although Kit Lawlor is still recovering from breaking his leg playing rugby, he turned up on Sunday as a table official and helped to organise the team.

In the afternoon a number of Dorking juniors took part in the grading which followed the competition and it was successful for all.

Luke Ashwood gained his 8th mon from 6th mon with 2 wins by Ippon, one just as the bell went for end of contest.
Adam Dubois moved up to 8th mon.
Sam Reeves went to 11th mon.
William Rudrum gained his 7th mon.
Natasha Watson gained her 10th mon.
Abi Jones gained her 11th mon.

Sunday afternoon also saw the largest group of Dorking seniors grading for some time. There were 4 Seniors who all successfully graded.

Tom Ramsey moved from 9th Kyu to 7th Kyu.
Paul Ritchie gained his 5th Kyu.
Luke Ramsey had his first contest as a senior and his grade was confirmed as 3rd Kyu
And last but not least Graeme Skelly jumped from 4th Kyu to 2nd Kyu.

The Senior Grading had to have some element of assessment due to the large range of weights and grades. Players were graded not just on success in competition but also on the quality of their techniques and their positive attacking judo. Randori was also used to give unequal weight players a chance to show their techniques. Graeme and Paul were asked to perform a 2 ˝ minute randori session. The randori definitely took more energy than some of the hard fought contests.
