The Dorking Judo Club - World Champion Visits Dorking Judo Club - 30th June 2005

World Champion Visits Dorking Judo Club
On Thursday 30th June there was an unexpected visitor to Dorking Judo Club - Kenzo Nakamura (Black Belt 5th Dan), a former Olympic and World Champion from Japan. Dorking Judo Club is very fortunate to have as a member Duncan Mark (Black Belt 2nd Dan) who is fluent in Japanese. Duncan is a friend of Kenzo and arranged the visit, providing members with a unique opportunity to meet a world-class judo player.

Kenzo, who is 31, visited Dorking Judo Club during one of its regular training sessions at the Rugby Club in Brockham. He helped the instructors teach the children and stayed to train with the adult members of the Club. He demonstrated methods for practicing and techniques that he successfully used in international competitions. Each of the adult members of the Club had a once in a lifetime chance to practice with him.

The Club Coach Richard Anderson (Black Belt 2nd Dan) said: “Mr Nakamura is a truly great judo player and it was an unbelievable honour to meet him. Our club members both young and old were privileged to benefit from his knowledge and experience. His calmness and ability at judo was an inspiration to all our club members.”

Kenzo took a gold medal (under 73kg) at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and won the World Championship in Paris the following year. He has spent a year in the UK on a scholarship with the Japanese Olympic Committee before he starts a coaching career in Japan. During this time he has visited a number of judo clubs in the UK.

Before leaving Dorking Judo Club Kenzo Nakamura said: “This Club is smaller than the clubs I am used to in Tokyo but the people practicing here are clearly enjoying their judo. I would very much hope they continue doing so for many years. I have enjoyed my visit to Dorking Judo Club.”
